Blog:

History of Ephesus dates back to around 6000 BC, making it one of the oldest and most important cities of the ancient world. Over the centuries, it was inhabited by various civilizations, including the Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines. It was also an important centre of early Christianity and was mentioned in several biblical texts.

Ephesus situated near the Aegean coast of Turkey, approximately 3 kilometres southwest of the present-day town of Selçuk and about 70 kilometers south of Izmir, Turkey's third-largest city.

The Celsus Library: One of the most iconic structures in Ephesus, the Celsus Library was built in the 2nd century AD and served as a monumental tomb for the Roman senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus. The library's facade features beautifully preserved statues and reliefs.

Ancient Theatre: This impressive ancient theatre could seat up to 25,000 spectators and hosted various performances, including plays, music, and political gatherings. It is one of the largest Roman theatres’ ever built.

The Temple of Artemis: Although mostly in ruins today, the Temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only a few columns remain from the original structure, but its historical significance is still palpable.

The House of the Virgin Mary, located in Ephesus, is a sacred site revered by both Christians and Muslims. According to Christian tradition, it is believed to be the final residence of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. The history of the house dates back to the early years of Christianity.

The house itself is a small stone structure, typical of the architecture of the region during the 1st century AD. It is situated on a hillside, surrounded by lush greenery and overlooking the ancient city of Ephesus. The interior of the house contains a small altar and a statue of the Virgin Mary, attracting thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year.

The significance of the House of the Virgin Mary extends beyond Christianity. Muslims also hold the site in high regard, as they believe that Mary, or "Maryam Ana" in Turkish, spent her later years there, cared for by the Apostle John after the crucifixion of Jesus. As a result, the house has become a place of pilgrimage for both Christians and Muslims, fostering a unique sense of unity and respect between the two religious communities.
